Is it Time For Alex Ferguson to Retire?

There is no doubt Alex Ferguson has been and continues to be one of the biggest names in British football but is it time for Sir Alex to retire?

He will forever go down in the history of Manchester United as one of the most successful managers of all time but a quick look back in history books show that it has not all been plain sailing for Sir Alex Ferguson. Those who follow the history of Manchester United will be aware that around 20 years ago he was on the verge of being sacked by Manchester United when Mark Hughes popped up with an injury time equaliser in an FA Cup game. United then went on to win the replay and win the FA Cup, earning Sir Alex Ferguson a stay of execution.

However, unfortunately while Ferguson is an expert at mind games he would appear to have met his match with Jose Mourinho, the ex-Chelsea boss, who challenged and often beat Ferguson at the mind games. While the two became very close friends towards the end of Mourinho’s stay at Chelsea there is no doubt Ferguson began to suffer after realising he was not the «boss».

We have then gone on to see a number of spats with fellow premiership managers most notably Kevin Keegan and Rafael Benitez which often descended into schoolboy tittle tattle. While there is no doubt that Ferguson has the skill, the ability and the backing of Manchester United to win the premiership again, there are some who believe now is the time for him to move on and enjoy his retirement.

This is a debate which has been ongoing for some time now and many people still believe he should have retired after the treble a few years ago because ultimately it is unlikely we will see anybody match this achievement in the short to medium term.
